Compressed Hours Employment Contract

Compressed working hours is used to implement time flexibility in the workplace as it provides a variation from the traditional 9-5. Compressed working hours involves working different patterns of hours on different days. Commonly an employee will work longer hours over four days of the week and take a day off or half a day off one day of the week. Generally, the pattern of hours is fixed and agreed in advance with the employer.

This Compressed Hours Employment Contract template has been created in response to the ever-increasing demand for a Compressed Working Week. Nowadays, employers increasingly recognise the needs of employees to balance their work and home responsibilities by enabling them to have the option of alternative working patterns.

A compressed working hours scheme allows employees to adapt their working patterns to meet their personal needs, while fitting in with the operational needs of the organisation. 'Compressed hours' means working the total normal full-time hours but in fewer days, that is, by working longer days.

This Compressed Hours Employment Contract does not set in stone the hours and days to be worked, it is flexible and allows for the parties to agree these between themselves. It provides for employees the opportunity to work more hours per day in exchange for a reduction in working time or working days usually over a weekly or fortnightly period.

It is a requirement under the Employment Rights Act 1996 for Employers to provide their Employees with a written statement of their main terms and conditions of employment. This must be provided within 8 weeks starting from the commencement of Employment. The Compressed Hours Employment Contract contains all the main terms and conditions required under the Act.

This Compressed Hours Employment Contract is in accordance with the statutory minimum requirements and complies with the Employment Equality (Repeal of Retirement Age Provisions) Regulations 2011. From 6 April 2011, it is no longer possible to retire employees once they reach the age of 65 unless their retirement can be objectively justified. Thus, this Employment Contract contains a clause stating that there is no retirement age in operation and employees are free to retire at any time they wish.
